A Real Taste of Finnish Cuisines – Sea Horse Restaurant (Ravintola)
Sea Horse Introduction
Notorious Sea Horse also is known as Sikala “piggery” is one of the most traditional restaurants in Helsinki, unlike many restaurants in Helsinki, Sea Horse open seven days a week.
Locals tend to go there every now and then when they feel like eating honest Finnish food or showcase Finnflavorsours for international guests – This is how good their Finnish cuisine really is! 😉
*Sea Horse offers a free and simple environment, which means, you can absolutely go there as you are, without any fancy dress or similar attire.
Great Finnish Starters
Our meal in Sea Horse (Ravintola) begins with a local favorite dish, Vorschmack aka the fish platter €12.50, serves with raw salted fish slices, duchesse potato, pickled cucumber, onion, beetroot, and sour cream.
The main concept for this dish is to savor the raw cured herring fish slices, just like how we used to enjoy smoked salmon, topped with any garnishes you like on a semi-hard oat biscuit and walla. 😉
*The starter dish in Sea Horse also includes; green salad, creamy salmon soup, snails with garlic butter, and lightly salted beef.
Crispy Fried Baltic Herrings
Here comes our fish wonder, plate decoration was quite an art we should say, the popular Finnish dish called Crispy Fried Baltic Herrings €18.90 – serves with mashed potatoes and beetroot.
The fish itself has a crispy crust and still remains a juicy core (still steaming hot prior serve), tastes sweet and sour in a harmonious way that wouldn’t override the actual taste of fried herrings.
*Sea Horse also serves others fish dishes; steaks of Baltic herrings, grilled salmon and Pike Perch a la Mannerheim (perch sauteed).
Famous Reindeer Fillet
Our dream finally came true when we get our fork & Spoon on the legendary reindeer fillet dish €39.90 serves with cranberry red wine sauce and mashed potatoes with onion and butter.
We had to admit that this dish is not what we think it should taste like, the reindeer fillet was actually had a very hard texture to chew on (like overcooked liver) while tastes quite gamy even though it was well soaked with delicious fruity sauces.
Thus, our lesson is learned and remember to think twice if you ever want to mess with Santa’s pal next time! 😉
*Sea Horse greatest meat dish collection also includes; beef steak, Wienerschnitzel (meat sausages), Finnish traditional meatball, breast of chicken, cabbage roll and many more.
Finnish Traditional Dessert
For our dessert option, the waitress strongly recommends us to have their signature dessert called “Finnish Squeaky Cheese with Cloudberry Jam” €9.50
This dessert tastes sweet and mild salty while has a strong cheesy flavor, and of course, it does make a squeaky noise on each bite due to its many small holes all around the cheese. 😉
*Sea Horse also serves other delectable desserts such as; Finnish pancakes with strawberry jams, frozen cranberry with hot caramel sauce, and homemade cheesecake.
