Best Tallinn Town Hall Cafe – Vana Toomas Cafe
Vana Toomas Legend
In the mornings, Vana Toomas operates as a café where local citizens and foreign tourists can have a light, delicious breakfast. In addition to that, they also offer a full à la carte menu for lunch and dinner.
Vana Toomas is also a great place for those who just want to have a couple of drinks and move on to another restaurant for dinner, or maybe even to a nightclub. They have a varied cocktail menu offered at lower prices and an extensive wine list, which can be combined with a food order, of course.
*Due to its strategic place directly opposite the Town Hall, visitors usually would take the opportunity by request sitting outside just to admire the beauty of Tallinn’s Town Hall.
Assorted Delectable Fish Platter
We happened to visit Vana Toomas Cafe around afternoon, thus, here comes our brunch “Kalavalik” Fish Platter (for two) €17.95 – serves with choice of herring, smoked salmon, spiced baltic sprats, pickles, red onion, sour cream.
As for fish of the day, we got three types of flavor on our plate (from left to right); tempura herring (well spiced, with light coating), sweet & sour herring (yummy, we favours the most), spiced baltic sprats (salty, ammoniac, ugh……yuck!) 😉
Furthermore, there are also two “Oishi” discoveries in this platter; Scrumptious perfectly wrapped smoked salmon cheese bomb and irresistible sweet & mild sour crunchy fresh pickles, you just can’t bargain these with the ones from the supermarket.
*Please note that all of the food presented on the plate was quite chilled, so we would rather regard this as a “cold” platter instead.
Cheezy Creamy Shrimp Tagliatelle
As a pure Asian breed, we are desperately in need at least a warm or hot dish on our meal, so here’s a plate of “Tagliatelle Krevettidega” Tagliatelle with Shrimps €15.95 to the rescue!
The pasta is indeed very “al dente”, fusing with rich creamy parmesan cheese on each string of noodle, added by a few more grates of cheddar as the perfect final touch (toppings).
Thus, you should know it by now, the reason for having so many churches around Tallinn, acts contemporary as a place to beg for mercy, after commit so many “fat” sins in those Estonian Cafes! 😉
*Other than shrimp tagliatelle, the waitress also suggested for us to have Hunter’s chicken tagliatelle with cherry tomatoes and mushrooms which is equally good in their pasta menu.
Satisfying Warm Creme Brulee
When someone (who borns with a sweet-tooth) just mentioned earlier there’s a dessert section in the menu, this means that you just can’t get away without a dessert session. 😉
For this reason, we took a “Creme Brulee” €9.95 for our dessert option, which is coated with berry sauce and pear stewed in cinnamon syrup.
Overall taste is satisfying, a thin molasses sugar crust layer to break and then savor with those warm smooth egg custard, taste alike to our hometown standard but price differentiates all the classiness.
*Vana Toomas also serves other dessert option such as; Homemade apple cake with cherry sauce and ice cream, Tarte Tatin with crème anglaise and ice cream, at a similar price rate.
