*Must Try* Exquisite Nine-Rectangle-Grid Ma La Hotpot – Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Steamboat
Today we are glad to discover another hidden gem at Bandar Puteri, Puchong which serves authentic Chong Qing Ma La Hotpot (重庆麻辣火锅)- for foodies who loves to enjoy spicy food like we do, be sure not to miss it!
Chong Qing Hotpot originated from China, started in the late Ming and early Qing in Chong Qing Jialing River, Chaotianmen and other terminals. It was the casual and simple dinner by the boatmen and workers that serve at the terminal. Due to the rapid development and reformation back then, this unique hotpot has been brought to every nook and cranny of the world to enjoy.
Hotpot Soup Base
Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Signature Ma La Soup Base (重庆牛油红汤锅) RM30.00 – uses more than twenty kinds of natural spices and top with premium red pepper and special dry chilli to produces the scent of thick and buttery hot soup base.
Unlike any cheap Ma La hotpot out there, this soup itself has a combination of unique hemp, spicy, refreshing, and fragrant flavour which is safe to consume and totally stress-free from toilet struggle (since it is made with 100% Chinese herbal ingredients) due to having loads of it! 🙂
For those who are uncertain about Ma La flavour, the restaurant is also kind enough to offer mix flavours which consist of half clear soup base and half Ma La soup base. You may also adjust the spicy level (up or down) of Ma La hotpot by simple request with the waiter (they will know what to do).
The Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Steamboat Restaurant (重庆老码头) offers a variety of condiments to mix & match for the Ma La hotpot session.
Personally recommend the premium sauces (additional RM2.00 charges each) – Fragrant Spicy Chilli Sauce (香辣酱) and Spicy Fermented Black Soybeans (特制豆豉), both taste equally flavourful and greatly enhances the overall taste of ingredients.
In order to enjoy a full Ma La hotpot dining experience, it is a wise choice to order some delectable snack dishes while helps in killing some time waiting for the Ma La Soup Base to be prepared.
Red Oil Pig Ears
Red Oil Pig Ears (红油猪耳) RM11.00 half portion – One of the local China delicacies, has a soft (skin) and crunchy (ear bones) texture, taste spicy and extremely fragrant with spices.
Fragrant Spicy Duck Kidney
Fragrant Spicy Duck Kidney (香辣鸭肾) RM11.00 half portion – Has a same chewy texture like chicken but way bigger in size, covered in a generous amount of fragrant red oil and taste delish.
Cold Slaw Vegetable Salad
Cold Slaw Vegetable Salad (凉拌蕨菜) RM9.00 half portion – A China version Jungle Fern (Paku-Pakis) which shines in purple colour, have a crunchy texture and taste like salty fermented beancurd with vegetables.
Hotpot Main Course
One of the aspect to prove that Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Restaurant is indeed very authentic – Serves a variety of animal innards as the main course (very delicate and scrumptious).
Basically any edible exotic parts from cow, chicken, duck and pork (you name it and they definitely have it on the menu).
The perfect timing to savour all of the ingredients is easy to grasp after a few tries, just swipe any ingredients into the Ma La Hotpot for 8 seconds then voila (any timing longer than that will produce hard and chewy texture which is inedible). Be prepared for some harsh finger (chopsticks) training ahead! 😉
Smooth Duck Intestines
Smooth Duck Intestines (鸭润肠) RM22.00 is the Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Steamboat Restaurant (重庆老码头) signature a must order dish.
It might look like Chee Chong Fun (猪肠粉) at first glance but texture wise (after boiling) it has a very springy yet crunchy texture like biting on a dozens layer of Konyaku Jelly.
Very compatible with the spicy buttery taste from Ma La Hotpot and personally highly recommends it!
Pig Yellow Throat
Pig Yellow Throat (猪黄喉) RM13.00 half portion or better known as pork aorta is another must-try dish in this exotic dining experience.
Don’t get the wrong intention by seeing from its appearance, it actually has a rubbery crunchy texture which gives a familiar feel like biting on the thin PVC board (its a throat ok!), taste-wise pretty much absorbs whatever you dip with.
If you are such a huge fan of chewing gum, this is something that you should be looking forward into. 😉
Fresh Cattle Duck
Fresh Cattle Duck (鲜牛毛肚) RM26.00 is a common beef part which we will have while having Beef Mix Bowl (牛杂).
It has a same exact soft crunchy texture like black fungus (木耳) while the huge and luxurious cut makes it worth to order on each visit.
Beef Tripe (牛百叶) RM13.00 half portion is another delicious cow innards which are best for Ma La Hotpot.
Not sure what to comment since you barely taste anything with just one stripe of it, but it definitely has the silky tofu texture after stuffing a spoonful of it.
*This particular ingredient is extremely delicate which needs the perfect timing (8 seconds) for cooking it.
Premium Lamb Slices
Sorry but we had to admit that Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Steamboat Restaurant (重庆老码头) is the only place that we indulged too much into those animal innards until placing meat slices towards the end of our meal.
Premium Lamb Slices (肥羊卷) RM28.00 comes in a large portion and generous wide cut (seriously can fill the whole mouth with one slice), tastes succulent fresh and non-gamy after dipping into Ma La Hotpot.
This AAA lamb slices quality is on par with Ding’s Emperor and truly is a die-hard reason that we will pay more visits in the future!
Hot Spicy Beef
Hot Spicy Beef Slice (麻辣牛肉) RM13.00 half portion is the only dish that makes us feel awe just by seeing its appearance – Ruby Red marinated beef meat which alerts us gonna be very spicy hot, chilli flakes/seeds surround the meat signifies us do not touch it else we will pay for the price!
Our chopsticks go back and forth around its plate for the whole dining session and even do the “gone-case” nodding out of consciousness while cooking this piece of art.
Thank god miracle happens and it actually doesn’t taste as bad (spicy) as we imagine it would be! Like many other Ma La Dishes, this hot and spicy beef slices also has its own unique chilli fragrant taste with a texture more like having a beef satay.
Turn out to be the worst dish always tends to be the best dish after all, this dish really fits to describe with one of our Malay local term “Sekali Try, Hari-Hari Mahu”. 😉
Sweet Potato Noodles
Still starving after having all these dishes? Chong Qing Lao Ma Tou Steamboat Restaurant (重庆老码头) also serves a variety of meal filler in their menu.
Purple Potato Starch Noodle (紫薯粉) RM10.00 is the most popular and common meal filler option for Chong Qing Ma La Hotpot.
Unlike any other local noodles, it has a thick and chewy texture just like having glass jelly (凉粉) but in a broad noodle style.
If you are opting some perfect ingredient to dig in with the enriched Ma La broth, purple potato starch noodle might be just the one you are looking for.
Tempura Rice Cake
Before leaving, we are being served with this delicious looking fried mochi called Red Sugar Rice Cake (红糖糍粑) RM15.00 – Fried Rice Cake Stripe serves with soybean powder and red sugar syrup.
If you had tried Japanese Mochi before, this Chinese version is more like an upgraded version of it by having a thin crispy fried batter layer covering the whole mochi, while having a generous amount of soybean powder and sugar syrup coating.
Red Sugar Rice Cake is crispy yet not oily from the outer and warm soft chewy (rice cake) filled with rice flour fragrance from the inner. This whole dessert combination is sure to put a huge smile on your face once tasting on it.
Although this dessert might look a bit like “Rojak” but still doesn’t stop us from giving a two thumbs up honest rating due to its taste and chef sincerity (you know who you are!) 😉
Food Love Story
A true love story between pork aorta’s on a bowl of chilli oil, the male (from behind) is giving a gentle hug for the female (at the front) with a piece of chilli proof as the men of his word.
Both now well rest in pieces (RIP) inside someone tummy and may they will be in love forever! 😉
