Today not only does Din Tai Fung remain popular with ordinary consumers, a visit to the restaurant is also a must for members of the business and political elite, and for international celebrities all around the world. While continuing to maintain its high popularity in Taiwan, Din Tai Fung is now giving people throughout the world the opportunity to experience a classic “taste of Taiwan” from opening branches all around the world.
Din Tai Fung Prosperity Yee Sang
As Malaysian Chinese, we love to celebrate in renown Chinese cuisines for any special occasions (since they rarely messed up our food order and provides good ambience).
We visited Din Tai Fung during Chinese New Year when they still offer Homemade Yee Sang (三文鱼鱼生) RM68.00 the smallest portion which can feed up to 4 people.
Yee Sang will definitely become the first serving dish (if you happen to order one) for a great opening. A senior staff will be handling the Yee Sang firsthand by pouring in all those remaining ingredients and sauces while wishing you with “Words of Blessings” on each “Pouring” segment.
If you are a married person, be sure to give the waiter a red packet (Ang Pau) as a token of appreciation. 😉
Now it’s our turn to mix up the Yee Sang by using chopsticks, the messier it becomes the tastier a Yee Sang would be, so keep on tossing until everything are finely mixed.
Instead of those common ingredients, Din Tai Fung Version has a hearty amount of nuts ( cashew and almond nuts) spread within which adds a new flavour to the Yee Sang.
We personally favour Ding Tai Fung Yee Sang due to its fine julienne carrots (very appetizing crunchy texture) which makes you keep digging for more after each bite.
*Do note that Yee Sang must be finished within the dining session for good omen. Besides, mixed Yee Sang taste will become watery and sour which is inedible after leaving it for some time.
Steamed Thousand Layer Cake
After Yee Sang session, we started off with Steamed Thousand Layer Cake (千层糕) RM7.50 which considered as one of the Din Tai Fung famous desserts.
If look close enough, it actually has tons of thin layers from the description. We managed to peel it thru layer while it is still steamy hot, or you may consume as per it is.
Taste delectable with a mild nutty sweet flavour while serving with black sesame seed sauce and condensed milk.
Signature Xiao Cai
Signature Xiao Cai (招牌小菜) RM8.60 is a Din Tai Fung Special dish featuring Seaweed, Beansprout and Beancurd Strips tossed in a spicy and tangy dressing.
Fresh and crunchy is what we feel while having it which tastes exactly like having a Chinese style Jabchae.
Signature Xiao Long Bao
Next up is the main culprit that makes people keep showing up at Din Tai Fung, Signature Pork Xiao Long Bao (小笼包) RM14.20 aka the soup dumpling.
Once biting off the tip, you can clearly see the soup essence inside the dumpling, which is best to serve along with some sliced ginger, soy sauce and vinegar condiments.
Compared to Paradise Dynasty’s (China) Xiao Long Bao, Ding Tai Fung (Taiwan) has a thinner dumpling skin which is more favours to our personal taste buds.
Feel free to leave a comment below and share us your opinion about both outlets Xiao Long Bao! 😉
Steamed Vegetarian Mushroom Dumpling
Apart from the signature Xiao Long Bao, we also love to have Steam Vegetarian Mushroom Dumpling (香菇素饺) RM13.80 during our Ding Tai Fung session.
These stewed gluten dumplings are stuffed with wholesome baby bok choi, five spiced dried bean curd and radish which makes it so popular among vegetarian eater.
Overall tastes like having a soft silky steam tofu (just plain flavour) which is good enough without any seasonings.
Din Tai Fung Shrimp Fried Rice
Din Tai Fung Shrimp Fried Rice (虾仁蛋炒饭) RM21.70 featuring classic egg fried rice with juicy shrimp is a never miss from our order list.
There is no hard chemistry for people to love this fried rice, it’s just simply deliciousness that rules everyone appetite (if you had tried it before).
Are you allergy to seafood? You can always opt for Pork Chop Fried Rice or Vegetable & Mushroom Fried Rice which both also considered as the premium selection from the fried rice series.
Hot & Sour Soup
During the Din Tai Fung dining session, we also ordered a Hot & Sour Soup (酸辣汤) RM12.30 to stimulate our appetite.
This thick spicy sour soup broth is included with some simple ingredient – fungus, beancurd, mushroom, scallion all slices into thin pieces which makes it easier to consume.
Highly recommend this soup for those who love to have spicy flavour soup.
Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豊) is definitely the best place to gather and experience best Taiwanese Cuisines especially Xiao Long Bao. Knowing it as a One Star Michelin restaurant, do attend early during peak hour especially weekend if you wish to avoid a long queue at any Din Tai Fung outlet.
