*Must Try* The BBQ Clam & Grilled Coconut Feast – Lokan Gerai Abang Amin
Gerai Abang Amin Introduction
Eating BBQ Lokan & Grilled Coconut has been huge a huge trend in recent years at Kota Kinabalu (thanks to local food television programme), hence, whenever you passed by Tuaran road, be sure to make a stop around Sulaiman Road area to enjoy this mouth-watering Lokan feast!
There are more than 20-30 stalls along the roadside (both sides) which practically sells the same thing (Lokan Bakar & Coconut), but based on our local guide introduction, the Gerai Abang Amin (the first stall) crowned first and serves the best Lokan Bakar around this area.
*Gerai Abang Amin specializes in BBQ Clam (Lokan Bakar), Grill Coconut (Kelapa Bakar) and Coconut Pudding.
Sneak Peek Preparation
Once ordered, we manage to observe and learn the Lokan preparation way since it is an open kitchen concept, not far from where we are actually sitting.
The grilling method was definitely traditional “Melayu” way, using woods and self-made grilling bar, the chef has to make sure the temperature is right and keep turning the Lokan (requires a lot of skills and patient) to ensure it is not overcooked.
*The kitchen area is rather smoky that will spread into the dining area (due to wind direction), be sure to pick a place further in if you would like to avoid a similar incident occurs.
Toothsome BBQ Lokan
After waiting roughly 5-10 minutes, the signature dish has finally reached our table, BBQ Clam (Lokan Bakar) RM12.00 – has 20 yummy pieces on each tray.
Just like any other types of shellfish, Lokan is actually sweet and chewy, tastes quite similar to satay due to their homemade bbq sauce, we could easily finish two full tray without any problem! 😉
*Feel like prepare it in your own recipe? They also sell raw Lokan to customers at RM10.00 (L) and RM8.00 (M) for 20 pieces.
Awesome Grill Coconut
Other than delicious BBQ Lokan, Gerai Abang Amin also serves another best delicacies in their shop, Grill Whole Coconut RM5.00 – featuring coconut charcoal grill into perfection and serve in whole.
The coconut looks still the same after the grilling process (except skin looks a bit darker), but the aftertaste is totally a different story to tell – tastes warm and mature, like mix caramelized coconut & pandanus flavor.
*Grill coconut also provides some health beneficial effect in reality; very good natural remedies to cure cold sickness and high blood pressure.
Delicious Coconut Pudding
After finishes everything on our table, we still have a small room left in our tummy and craving for something else, thus, the bestselling Coconut Pudding RM5.00 at our service.
Unlike many out there, this coconut pudding has a way firmer texture, while tastes nectareous and milky with a strong hint of coconut aftertaste, definitely the perfect dessert conclude our meal! 😉
*To avoid anyone performing any “Jakun” act like us, highly recommend mixing the pudding and coconut flesh for the best savoring experience.
