Shifen Old Streets (十份老街) – The Chinese Lantern District
Located in the Pingxi area (平溪), Shifen Old Streets is a collection of lanes and alleys in and around the Shifen railway station area. Originally built for transporting coal during the Japanese era, the station and tracks run straight through the village.
With the marketplace surrounding the train station and the openness in which people can freely cross the track running straight through the centre of town, the marketplace area of Shifen is also a great place to grab some snacks and souvenirs.
*The 40-metre tall Shifen Waterfall (十分大瀑布) is located 30 minutes away by walking northeast from the train platform area on either side of the tracks. Note that the waterfall is located on the right side, and those who walk on the left side will have to cross the tracks again further down the path.
The Sky Lantern Event
The most popular event in Shifen Old Street without question is the “Sky Lantern Event” with almost 30 different shops which operate and sells Chinese Lantern.
Just pick any local lantern shop at Shifen Old street (with a reasonable price) and they will provide you with the lantern paper and writing brush so that you can write down your wish on it.
*Do note that every lantern paper colour has its own bracket of charm and luck, be sure to consult the shop owner before you proceed with your customized lantern.
Once you are done “decorating” with your own lantern then off you may go to the main plaza (which is right in the middle of the railway trail) where the major event kicks in.
Find your best spot along the railway then hand your smartphone or camera to the workers (whom you just bought the lantern) and they will be sure to take a bunch of best photos for you while busy setting off your lantern. 😉
Legendary Snacks in Shifen Old Street
The one and only best snacks that you wouldn’t want to miss during your visit to Shifen Old Street are the famous “Chicken Wing Stuffed with Rice” (鸡翅包饭) priced at NT$65 each.
*Average time of queue should be 20-30 minutes, so make sure that you have enough time to wait before proceeding on the line.
The Fresh Barbequed Boneless Chicken Wing are succulent tender enough which makes you keep wanting for more (especially when biting right into all those juicy flavoursome rice coated inside), plus roasted sesame on the surface just pretty much wraps these masterpieces into a few words – Finger Lickin Good! 😉
Personally still highly recommend to try out this yummy chicken wing despite with all those boring long waiting queues but yes definitely worth it!
