Singaporean Famous Chain Kopitiam – Old Chang Kee (老曾记)
Old Chang Kee Introduction
The history of Old Chang Kee dates back to 1956 when it started with just a small stall in a coffee shop outside the former Rex cinema along McKenzie Road. People just loved the delicious pastry stuffed full of curried potatoes, chicken, a slice of egg, fried with special herbs and spices.
Today, Old Chang Kee has become Singapore’s leading brand of curry puffs and other hot savories. Old Chang Kee markets its curry puffs through various concepts – from kiosks along the road, to modern shopping malls and petrol stations (with more than 70+ outlets in Singapore alone).
*Although Malaysia also has a few Old Chang Kee outlets, we still prefer having it (at least once) in Singapore – definitely got slight differences in terms of taste and menu lists. 😉
Dry Mee Siam Bee Hoon
First up is the Old Chang Kee Dry Dry Mee Siam Bee Hoon $2.60 (only available in Singapore outlets) – serves with fried bee hoon (rice vermicelli), dried tofu, egg slices, and sambal sauce.
Bee hoon has a smooth and moist texture, has an irresistible fragrant from the Kasturi lime and sambal sauce, overall is delicious yet rather spicy due to the sauce, is a must order if you planning to have a full course meal at Old Chang Kee.
*Other Bee Hoon that Old Chang Kee has to offer: Black/White Bee Hoon, Dry Laksa Bee Hoon, and Satay Bee Hoon.
Old Chang Kee Curry Puff
Next up is the reason Old Chang Kee gain so much fame up till date, The Signature Old Chang Kee Curry Puff $1.50 – curry chicken, with egg & potato in puff pastries.
The crust is golden crisp done to perfection (non-oily taste), while puff interior is stuffed with a freshly baked hearty amount of ingredients that keep you munching!
Only down part regarding this curry puff – they all have a very thick pastries skin, gotta dig rather deep in order to reach the core (stuffings), not recommend to have more than two pieces if you are the “thin crust gang” similar like us. 😉
*Other than classic curry puff, Old Chang Kee also serves other curry puff flavors such as; Chicken Mushroom’O (creamy chicken mushroom) and Sardine’O (sardine).
Old Chang Kee Fishball OnStik
This nostalgic little treat “Big Fishball OnStick” $2.00 appears to be the “Black Horse” which drives us to keep visiting Old Chang Kee more frequently.
Old Chang Kee fishballs are soft chewy and filled with elasticity, has a mild fragrant of fish meat (proves its freshness) and taste even scrumptious while savoring it with the Thai chili sauces! 😉
Fishball OnStik has two variations in Old Chang Kee (big or small sized) but we both agreed that the bigger one tastes better.
*Old Chang Kee OnStik menu: Cheezy Chicken Ball, Sotong Ball, Cheezy Chicken Sausage, Spring Roll, Chicken Wrap, Chicken Nugget, Fish Fillet, Crab Nugget, and Prawn Nugget.
*Kindly note that menu availability and price might vary from time to time
