Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall (国父纪念馆) – History of Taiwan National Founding Father
Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall is built in 1972 to commemorate the national founding father Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s and his unparalleled morality, and revolutionary conducts and to promote Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s doctrine.
The hall contains displays of Sun’s accomplishments from the revolution during and after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, and today is a meeting ground for various social, educational, and cultural activities. Although the hall’s main purpose was intended to display historical relics of Sun’s life and the Xinhai Revolution, it later was opened to performances and exhibitions.

Sun Yat Sen Main Hall
The Memorial Main Hall lies the national founding father Dr Sun Yat-Sen’s bronze statue which acts like “Liberty Statue” for Taiwan.
The Honour Guards are set up (one at each side) for commemorating founding father, Dr Sun Yet-Sen, his great contribution in establishing the Republic of China.
The Army, Navy and Air Force take turns to serve as honour guard on below schedule:
- Honour guards changing ceremony time: 9am-5pm every hour daily.
*The whole guard changing ceremony takes time for about 15 minutes, before each ceremony you can time to visit an exhibition going on around the memorial hall.
Dr Sun Yat-Sen History West Exhibition Room
The History West Exhibition Room introduces important changes to modern Taiwan in vivid detail: Dr Sun Yat-sen coming to Taiwan three times, the influence of the revolution on this island, and the practice of the Three People’s Principles here.
West Exhibition Room also showcases Dr Sun Yat-sen contribution in Taiwan reformation, including the old politic document which is now able to reveal to the public.
The Treaty of Shimonoseki (马关条约) which ends The First Sino-Japanese War and vintage newspaper regarding it are also included in this exhibition.
Dr Sun Yat-Sen History East Exhibition Room
The East Exhibition Room mainly emphasis on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s life over six topics: “Studying hard to save the nation”, “The distant ideal”, “Revolutionary movement”, “Father of a democratic republic”, “Carrying out his ideal’, and “Dr Sun Yat-sen of the people”, with a total of 122 rare records and pictures of his profound thoughts, revolutionary spirit, and admirable personality.
Organizing the Hsing Chung Hui and Advocating Revolution Dr Sun Yat-sen on November 24, 1984 established the Hsing Chung Hui at Honolulu with the solemn pledge of “expelling Tartars, restoring the Chinese race and establishing the republican government.”
Sojourn in Taiwan to lay plans for the Huichow uprising In October 1900, Dr Sun assigned Cheng Shih-Liang to organize a revolutionary army and plan for the Huichow uprising. One month before Dr Sun came to Taiwan from Japan and asked the Japanese Governer-General Kogama Gentaro for his support. However, an unforeseen reshuffle of the Japanese cabinet and a subsequent change in Japanese Policy thwarted his efforts.
Directing the Chen Nan Kuan Military Operation After the founding of the Tung Meng Hui, in August 1905. Dr Sun continued to launch several uprising, the best known of which was the Chen Nan Kuan uprising in 1907.
The Kwangchow Uprising of 1911 On March 29, 1911, at the behest of Dr Sun, Huang Hsing and Chao Sheng led their comrades in the uprising in Kwangchow, where they fought fiercely against the Ch’ing Army. Despite an overwhelming defeat and the death of 72 martyrs, the event shook the entire world.
Public Relation with Western Foreign Country during revolution campaign can also be seen in this exhibition hall which includes documents, banknotes.
Chungshan National Gallery
The Chung Shan Art Gallery is a heavyweight art gallery at the memorial hall and also a national class art gallery, frequently extends invitations to renowned local and foreign artists to stage exhibitions.
The art gallery boasts an expansive space with an optimal layout that offers an expansive view. Many precious art exhibits have lent a touch of spectacular excellence to the Chung Shan Art Gallery.
This month (that time we visit) showcases artwork from China National Artist Mr Chiang 姜一涵.

Tswei-Heng Gallery venue boasts a warm, rustic, and friendly environment. Ideal for exhibiting delicate works of calligraphic carvings, and jade/stone carvings, this venue is often used for staging individual exhibition events through general applications.
“Eleven Face of Guan Yin Buddha” (十一面观音) drawings from the year 2003.
Stone Carving which used for personal signature ink stamp since ancient times, the gallery also offers custom-made stone carving if you are interested.
Wooden Paper Fan with the mini calligraphic word in various design is also one of the highlights in the exhibition.
Memorial Hall Outdoor Activities
Morning Market which sells fruits, vegetables and snacks are being held right on the outside from 7.00 am till 10.00 am at the east door of the memorial hall during the weekend.
Be there early if you would like to blend into their morning activities since they will off business right after they clear their stocks!
Freelance Artist can be seen along the entrance hallway from a solo singer, pianist, guitarist, saxophonist, basically you name it they have it!

Interesting Facts About Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall:
- President Chiang Kai-shek’s funeral was held in the main hall after his death in 1975.
- Greater China’s most prestigious movie award ceremony, the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards (or the Chinese Oscars if you will), is held annually inside the hall’s auditorium.
- Dr Sun is known by several Chinese names, including his birth name Sun Wen (孫文), his genealogical name Sun Deming (孫德明), his childhood nickname Dixiang (帝象), his courtesy name Zaizhi (載之), and his baptized name Rixin (日新). While in Hong Kong attending school, he acquired the name Yat-sen (逸仙, mandarin Yìxiān), which he would most commonly use, and afterwards acquired a name derived from Japanese, Sūn Zhōngshān (孫中山), the most popular of his Chinese names. History will most commonly refer to him by his Cantonese name, Sun Yat-sen.
