Pasar Gadong Wet Market – Brunei Best Evening Food Bazaar
The Gadong Wet Market or better known as “Pasar Malam Gadong” by the locals is located just 10 minutes walk from the Gadong Mall. This market used to be a gathering place for street food vendor until the government decided to upgrade to a proper site (well-constructed building) for modern and cleanliness purposes.
Gadong Wet Market houses various types of local street food, fruits, vegetables and many more. You will definitely get a portion of pie (something to eat and buy) from this market as long as you are not too picky! 😉
Food Market Section
We started off Our Gadong Food Journey from this finger food stall, there are an array of snacks ranging from fried sweet potato ball, fried banana, fried jackfruit, doughnut, popiah and many more!
If you are curious enough, feel free to try some of them (overall tastes good), just spend BND 1.00 and you will get roughly 3-4 pieces out of it which considers a very great deal! 😉
Pulut Bakar Udang & Pulut Bakar Daging one of our favourite street food in Brunei, this is actually grilled glutinous rice roll which has shrimp or meat floss stuffings and taste like sambal.
BND 1.00 will yield 3 pieces of these bad boys and you can actually request for a mix flavour as well!
Malay Style Pancake with a delectable type of flavour to choose from – Peanut, Peanut & Chocolate Sauce, Peanut & Cheese, Chocolate & Cheese, and Cheese.
Would say it seems and smell alike from what we had in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur so we decided to skip this one and move on.
We called these “Carbohydrates Stall” which serves mainly meal filler food such as fried noodles, fried vermicelli, fried broad noodles, fried rice and Bakso (Indonesian Beef Ball Noodle Soup).
If you intend to fill your stomach from the night market, this is the few stalls that you must visit throughout the trip! 😉
BBQ Chicken Wing & Skewer Brothers rumoured to be the best among all in Gadong Wet Market which you can smell it from miles away due to those heavy charcoal smokes they are making.
BND 6.00 will get you 2 skewer or 5 pairs of chicken wings, not considered cheap but definitely worth a try!
Grill Seafood Stalls is the main culprit behind for making us own a ” Nasty Hair Smell” – due to a large amount of smoke they are making after visiting the whole Gadong Wet Market, we basically rush into the toilet and took our second bath (including hair wash) once we reached back to our hotel.
From these stalls, you can get any grilled seafood you like (mainly fish) at a quite reasonable price from BND 7.00 – BND 10.00 onwards. We did not pick any of these since we rather spend that amount of money in a well-established (good environment) restaurant. 😉
However, if you are a true foreigner (Non-Borneo or West Malaysian) then we would highly recommend trying this grilled seafood since it has a special aroma especially after coating with sambal belacan sauce.
A special theme food stall which sells grilled steaks, chicken feet and bihun soup “vermicelli with broth” BND 3.00 which manages to catch our attention especially after seeing a lot of local people ordered, “Chicken Feet Vermicelli with Broth” (2nd row from left).
We immediately regret that we had too many snacks from earlier stalls and have to give up on this, will definitely try this one our next Brunei trip for sure! 😉
Apart from mass choices of street food, chilling beverage is also another attraction for the Gadong’s Food Section.
Based on our observation while queue-ing, the bestseller beverage placement should be ABC Mixed => Teh Ais => Kopi Ais and so on.
Just by spending BND 1.00 and you will get a jumbo large cup of it, so why not right?
Brought too much yummy stuff but can’t wait to get home and eat? Fret not, in Gadong Wet market there are rows of tables & chairs set up on the market just to ease up your hungry tummy! 😉
There is also free water tap (at market corner) to wash up your hands after the hearty meal. Be sure to also clean up your mess (leftover) on the table while proceeding to the water tap since the public dustbin is situated right behind it as well.
Wet Market Section
Gadong Wet Section are consists of fruit stalls, live seafood catch, livestock and vegetables stall. It pretty much covers (sells) the same content from what we saw in Tamu Kianggeh from the morning session.
It was quite disappointing that majority stall is closed during the day of our visit which left only fruit stalls which are active in the business.
Bruneians love to eat durians especially those with dense sweet flavour and rich mellow taste!
We personally love to have bitter taste durians but gradually fell in love with their durians after having a full taste of their Local Durian Shake!
Pulasan Fruit which has an appearance and meat similar to Rambutan. While very similar to rambutan, the fruit lacks the hairy spines.
The flesh is very sweet and juicy, and separates easily from the seed, much more easily than the rambutan.
In addition, unlike the seed of the rambutan, the seed of the pulasan is readily edible raw. It has a flavour somewhat similar to almonds.
Binjai Fruit, which namely the “Borneo Mango” by the locals. It has a thick brown skin (when fully ripe) and has taste/texture similar to the mango.
The fruit can be eaten while dipped in chilli and dark soy sauce or best serve after pickling. It is an excellent ingredient for making spice base for chillies sambal which is best eaten with river fish.
Do Brunei seems to be a boring country? Considering it as a full ledge Islamic Country, at least they still have their own entertainment method.
Imagine those buzzing market hall mixing with some classic/popular Indonesian melodic, this is what we truly experience along with our Gadong Wet Market visit.
Even a short eating session in the market feel rather relaxing while listening to that charismatic Lagu Dangdut, you have our sincere thanks, DVD stall! 😉
Gadong Wet Market is a must place to visit (especially if you are around Gadong Mall) while you are travelling to Brunei. It is a fun and direct spot to experience local Bruneians life and food culture.
