Truly Hidden Non Halal Food In Brunei – Lim Ah Siaw Restaurant
During our trip to Brunei, we are lucky enough to pay a visit to a local non-halal restaurant in Bandar Seri Begawan. Yes, you read it correctly, right in the middle of the city center.
But those non-halal restaurants are not so easy to find and requires some in-depth exploration. You are not gonna see a non-halal restaurant in the “public exposed area” without spending some time walking into some ulu-ulu road. For this restaurant, we walked roughly 10 minutes from the main street and everything proofs to be worthy once we finally spotted it! 😉
*We do not recommend to walk into this street during the night time from 6.00 pm onwards (a lot of stray dogs and bad street light) unless you rent a vehicle which can drive you in and out.
Unlike what we had in mind earlier, Lim Ah Siaw Restaurant is actually situated right inside of a “Pork Market” which sells almost everything regarding pork from fresh meat cuts to dry sundry goods.
We are being told earlier (by a local guide) that most of their pork meat is freshly delivered from neighbouring state (Sarawak, Limbang) since Brunei do not supply it themselves. So it would be considered extremely rare occasions (like having a live fish some inland country) that you would be able to have a taste of *Oink Oink” in such a non-halal production scarce country.
Stir-Fry Onion Ginger Deer Slices
This stir-fry onion ginger deer slices BND 7.00 are considered as the restaurant speciality and definitely is a must try since we rarely had any wild game meat in West Malaysia.
Deer meat slices are succulent without any gamy taste, tastes delectable with the X.O black sauce and a small hint of spicy flavour from various spices.
Personally could easily finish 2 to 3 bowl of rice with this dish alone.
Spicy Crispy Soy Pork Knuckle
If you love to have roasted pork then the restaurant popular dish – Spicy Crispy Pork Knuckle BND 7.00 is specifically made for you!
A whole pork knuckle is chopped into bite-sized (not sure how they manage to do it with bones still intact) then light drizzle with the mixture of spicy chilli soy sauce.
Taste, needless to say, is heavenly good while still manage to produce those saliva drooling crunchy sound while munching on it. 😉
Dry Buttermilk Floss Prawn
Since we are such a big-time seafood lover, we would never miss by ordering a plate of Dry Buttermilk Prawn BND 7.00 to heed our cravings.
The Buttermilk Prawn tastes delicious and considered on par with those we had in “Big Chinese Restaurant”. However, the only down part of it is that they use a fairly small shrimp instead of a normal size one for this dish.
Not only that they actually clear everything (including innards which is good) off the shrimp, they also relentlessly peel every part of delicious shell off before frying (including those precious prawn head!) which lost the true meaning of having it unless you only tend to enjoy crunchy egg floss coating. ;(
Chinese Assorted Fishmaw Soup
During the meal, we also ordered a bowl of Fish Maw Soup BND 6.00 to fulfil the Chinese dining concept of having 3 dishes and 1 soup.
This thick texture soup is well seasoned and packed with extra collagen which is good for ladies (beauty purposes).
For those who love to eat shark fin soup, this one is a great alternative option since both soups have almost the similar taste and texture.
Pork Skin Crispy Cracker
After enjoying a hearty meal in Lim Ah Siaw Restaurant, be sure not to miss it by getting some Homemade Pork Skin Cracker only costs BND 1.00 for each bag.
As the name prescribed, it actually made with plain pork skin which is being fried with some salt as seasonings.
Taste like some crunchy “Keropok” which have a slight taste of pork on it, highly recommend enjoying this delightful treat with a bottle of beer! 😉
A treat of lunch in Lim Ah Siaw Restaurant is truly an exciting yet satisfying moment that we encountered during our Brunei Trip. Not to mention the same ulu-ulu road which we had to walk back and forth, but overall definitely worth the time invested plus relatively cheap costs (total bill) for having such a fulfilling meal!
